‘How to’ guide that is no practical use - [Sunday Herald]
“Every year,” said Philip Roth recently, “70 readers die and only two are replaced.” By “readers” Roth meant people who do not regard books as commodities, or pseudo-intellectual accessories, people who read serious books with high-minded intent. With so many other, less mentally taxing pursuits available, reading is ecoming a lost art.
